RED ALERT. i just tried to upgrade two of laptops a friends and my own using the Windows update in Windows Vista. One I can no longer connect to the internet and the other I can't print. Now the wonderful HP updates fail for my HP printer(both notebooks are HP) and they keep nagging us to get an "extended warranty".

I did the lovely vista SP2 update !!! took forever and now I just have problems.

Not too happy :(( Any help would be appreciated.

Router change fixed one problem

One thing to help with the HP wireless printer issue is to disengage cross communication isolation in the router. This improves network security by preventing one wireless device from talking to another once this feature was disabled the problem was solved on one of my systems. Still working on getting the driver to work on the other. Next step is to force and HP driver install using the windows vista printer set up.

Sorry to hear pres

Vista SP 2 update is very very new do it only when you have time.  I would turn off Windows vista ability to make auto updates which you can do by going to control panel and the last icon-- windows updates-- turn auto updating off entirely.  That way you don't update unless you decide to and also you can do it when you have the time to fool around with it.

Bad updates like that are sometimes resolved by going back to windows update and having it retry the update. I've had to do it 5 or more times before it worked.

I know the system is by no means without it's problems and HP has all kinds of driver problems but at least they are trying to fix them.  One thing I find with HP is a lack of real world testing before they put solutions out and they bundle way too much junk into essential things like drivers.  HP has started supporting Linux for drivers etc which is a very good thing.

Many people don't know it but Linux is very much more secure than Windows.  It has become so easy to use I recommend everyone consider installing it as a dual boot where you can choose to boot Vista or Linux at boot time or using virtualbox where you can run a linux window (or full screen).  Virtualbox has terrible tech support people but a very good group of programmers working on it.  There are so many people using it if you don't mind looking things up on the net when you have problems.  It's like creating a whole new computer on your desktop.  Then you can have all the features on windows plus all the power of linux at once.  Or just go wild and go 100 percent linux.  Linux is very secure one thing I hate about Microsoft is they make the install very very insecure and you have to be a computer genius to go in and make it more secure.  Microsoft really should go the route of completely open sourcing things.

I couldn't believe HP used the update process to try to sell extended warranties I will be calling them on Monday to find out about that but we have a problem on some work computers with that.  Just another reason to turn off auto updates in Vista.
